St Mary's, Carrick-on-Shannon, Ireland

St. Mary’s Church in Carrick-on-Shannon, Ireland has been refurbished back to its former glory with the help of Cupa Natural Slate. This Gothic style church with towering steeple is at the heart of the community. A sympathetic approach to the restoration of this significant local landmark building was required. Cupa’s Campo 98 slate was considered the ideal choice.

Designed by distinguished Dublin architect, W.H Hague, St. Mary’s Church is steeped in history and attracts a large number of visitors each year. The charitable efforts of the community helped secure funding for a new roof and additional on-going restoration work.

It was important to retain St. Mary’s historic characteristics, whilst ensuring a long-lasting quality refurbishment. Cupa Natural Slate’s Campo 98 product was chosen for the new roof. Campo 98’s strength and natural beauty complement and harmonise with the rest of the church and surrounding architecture perfectly.

Campo 98 is a blue grey slate with a smooth surface and non-rusting metallic particles. Ideal for Ireland’s Atlantic weather, it is resilient to the elements and is available in a thickness of 5.5mm. Overall 1200 slates were used on the intricate roof design at St. Mary’s. Campo 98 will help ensure St. Mary’s continues to be a part of Carrick-on-Shannon’s historic environment for years to come.

Cupa Natural Slate leads the world in slate production, supplying around one in every four of the natural slate specified across the globe today. The company employs a number of quality control tests to ensure only the highest quality of slate is produced and all its slate meets or exceeds internationally recognised standards.

A unique barcode allocated to each crate of slate holds information regarding that slate’s quality, type and origin along with its test results and details of who worked on that particular batch. This ensures superior traceability and future matching. Campo 98 is tested in compliance with British and European Standards, including BS EN 12326-2:2000.

As a testament to their quality, Cupa offer a 30-year guarantee on all slate, showing their commitment to the product and customer satisfaction.
