Privett, Petersfield, Hampshire

Church Farm Cottage has stood in the picturesque village of Privett near Petersfield in Hampshire since the 18th century. It has recently been the subject of sympathetic restoration and extension with CUPA Natural Slate being specified for the project’s roofing.

The cottage is located in a beautiful rural area of Hampshire and so it was essential that all materials used on the project harmonised with the surrounding area. CUPA Natural Slate was specified for the roofing material because, in addition to its widespread use on new-build residential and modern commercial building projects, it is regularly specified for projects within conservation areas, national parks, heritage sites and areas of outstanding natural beauty. It is also regularly specified as an acceptable alternative to locally quarried slate due to its comparable composition and quality.

Commenting on the project Nigel Land, Skyline Roofing said, “I have worked in the roofing industry for 30 years. CUPA supplied a superb slate, which I was very impressed with and my roof tilers are very happy to work with. The owners of Church Farm Cottage are delighted with their new roof and we are now using CUPA Natural Slate on another building project in the same village.”

The existing front roof slope of the cottage remained and an extension to double the size of the house was built on the rear using CUPA 12 slates which comply with BS 600: Part 2, French Specifications P32.301 and P32.302, and EN 12326. CUPA 12 is a grey slate with a smooth matt surface, which is split to an average thickness of 4-6 mm. It is a slate that is noted for its exceptional consistency of thickness and surface appearance. A blue/black clay angle ridge was bedded onto the main ridges and hips but on the dormer hips these were mitred and soakered.
